Com·positions is a series of propositions on burning questions in the field of contemporary editorial design. From micro-typography to hybrid and cyborg publications: oral presentations, talks and graphic/editorial performances; workshops, working and discussion groups, design and editorial works exhibitions chybrid publications, paper books, book-objects, digital publications, …d and reading groups.

The term “hybrid” et “cyborg” publications are tributes to the richness of the propositions by artists and designers who work at the crossroad of various formats, from experimental book-objects to digital pamphlets.

The exhibition “Messy Bindings ∿ Reliures messy” presents a research into the soft, limp, messy bindings of Belgian feminist publications contained in local archives in Brussels. Messy Bindings is an inventory of forms that are relatively accessible production-wise, and that show inventive ways to transform strings and staples into sublime bindings.

A Box of Book Memories
From a quirky family emblem to a puzzling book theft, a trove of urban narratives to a library of unwritten stories, from the everyday artistry of editing to the hustle of publishing—these are threads that have woven my journey into the world of books. To publish, in essence, is to make public. But in the world of books, it’s a tapestry of tasks, none of which, on their own, quite capture the essence of publishing. From reader to writer, editor to designer, distributor to bookseller, and beyond—a publisher is a network of connections. In this talk, I’ll share personal stories alongside a broader narrative of women in the book trade. Picking from a box and flipping through a scrapbook of memories, I’ll delve into chance encounters, meaningful collaborations, and the sometimes challenging threads of collective effort.

Nina Paim is a Brazilian designer, curator, editor, and publisher, based in Porto, Portugal. She has co-curated numerous exhibitions, workshops, and events, including Escola Aberta (Rio de Janeiro, 2012), Beyond Change (Basel, 2018), Department of Non-Binaries (Sharjah, 2018), Feminist Findings (Berlin, 2020), and most recently, etceteras: a feminist festival of publishing and design (Porto, 2023). She co-edited "Taking a Line for a Walk" (Spector Books, 2016) and "Design Struggles" (Valiz, 2021). A three-time recipient of the Swiss Design Awards, Nina has imparted her knowledge through international teaching and lectures, while her written works have been published by Occasional Papers (UK/BE), Les presses du réel (FR), esad-idea (PT), aveditionsl (DE), and the Korea Society of Typography (KR). In 2019, she co-founded the feminist platform Futuress.org, which she co-directed until 2023, when she established Bikini Books, an independent feminist publisher for design based in Porto, Portugal.

We open the doors of the space at 10am °⸛⸰ the “silver space” is on the fifth floor of Beursschouwburg, accessible from inside the building by a legendarily infinite staircase and an on-request elevator. The room usually welcomes DJs and dancing bodies, the corridor leads to toilets on one side and a rooftop terrasse on the other. Inside the room are different kinds of seats, from regular chairs to cushions and carpets, on which early guests can come and sit, sip a cup of tea, read booklets and ephemeras, listen to audio pieces, enjoy visual elements and rest.

At 11°° the event starts, with the organizer Loraine and artist Moustapha Guissé on the mic, introducing the space, the program, the sound devices present in the room, making space for oral and audio transmission, making connections with other forms that will be present in the day.

Then, Loraine and graphic designer Sarah Magnan then guide everyone in a collective meditation and SF futurology exercise, opening up a a dreamed alternative space-time for publishing practices ⸰⸰⸰ ⋱

Coming back to our reality, we hear invited guests for short presentations of parallel workshops and participatory moments that will take place after the lunch break ⦂ Backstage, a workshop to make (up) one’s personna with artists and performers Vinciane Mandrin & Nino André ⎰⎰ an emancipatory science fiction reading group with artist & writer Clara Pacotte & graphic designer Sherida Kuffour ⎰⎰ diasporic memories and publishing with artists and graphic designers Joud Toamah, Garine Gokceyan & Marie Damageux ⎰⎰ an arpentage of the book “Abécédaire d’auto-édition féministe” by book-binder and researcher Lissa Choukrane ⎰⎰ a working table to prototype displays for soft publications, for those who prefer a different way to connect.

At 12⸰30 pm we take a break, eat, and fill our body and eyes with the food creations of designers Roxanne Maillet and Leo Ren O’faigain. After the lunch break, at 1⸰30 pm the parallel workshops start, spread in the space.

At 4°°, we gather again to listen to slam artist Joëlle Sambi, designer and educator Mio Kojima and asiofeminist podcast creator Mélanie Cao, whose voices compose a landscape full of tips and shared experiences in bringing different voices together.

The day ends with a mix of recordings from the day by designer and DJ Sarah Saleh, as part of her research “Archival Resistance, Sampling as a Political practice”.

A slow ending of the day from 5°° to 6°°pm to discuss, conspire, sit or lay down, sip a cup of tea, read booklets and ephemeras, listen to audio pieces, enjoy visual elements and rest.

This is a multilingual event with partial language & accessibility translations in the form of hybrid publishing (projections, prints, audio files ⸰⸰⸰)

For *Whispering pages & interrogation hearts*, Florence Cheval will be observing and describing the space, artifacts, publications, people, exchanges and reflections deployed over the course of the day. She will transcribe the thread of events in order to weave an accessible living archive of the situated research developed by Loraine Furter, navigating between the translation of things into texts, texts into languages, spoken words into writings.

In addition to showing the graphic works of program participants cNino André, Sarah Magnan, Roxanne Maillet, Vincianne Mandrin, Marie Damageuxd and Juliana Vargas Zapata, original works were created by graphic designers Estelle Ndjop Pom, Lara Dautun, Tiphanie Hottin, Roxanne Maillet and Leo Ren O’faigain.

This program is organized by Loraine Furter, as part of the research project “The politics of publishing: researching encounters between artists’ books and intersectional feminist tools” which addresses artists’ books and the politics of publishing, creating forms to remember overlooked histories in this field, through a critical design approach which includes feminist tools. The project materializes in a series of hybrid publications (paper, digital, spatial, oral) that re·activate objects and histories and re·circulate them.

Com·positions est une série de propositions sur des questions brûlantes dans le champ du design éditorial contemporain, de la micro-typographie aux publications hybrides et cyborg: des présentations orales de type conférences et performances graphiques/éditoriales; des ateliers de type workshops, groupes de travail et de discussion; des expositions d’œuvres graphiques et éditoriales cpublications hybrides, livres papier, livres-objets, éditions numériques, …d contemporaines et des groupes de lecture et d’activation des expositions.

Le terme “publications hybrides” et “publications cyborg” sont des hommages à la richesse des propositions faites par de nombreux·ses artistes et designers, qui travaillent aux frontières de différents supports, des livres-objets aux publications numériques.

L’exposition “Messy Bindings ∿ Messy Reliures” présente une recherche sur les reliures souples, molles et désordonnées des publications féministes belges contenues dans les archives locales Bruxelloises. “Messy Bindings” est un inventaire de formes relativement accessibles en termes de production et qui montrent des manières inventives de transformer des agrafes et des bouts de ficelle en reliures sublimes.

Une boîte à souvenirs de livres
D’un emblème familial excentrique à un vol de livre déroutant, d’un trésor de récits urbains à une bibliothèque d’histoires non écrites, de l’art quotidien de l’édition à l’effervescence de la publication, tels sont les fils qui ont tissé mon voyage dans le monde des livres. Publier, par essence, c’est rendre public. Mais dans le monde du livre, il s’agit d’une tapisserie de tâches, dont aucune, à elle seule, ne capture l’essence de l’édition. Du lecteur à l’écrivain, de l’éditeur au concepteur, du distributeur au libraire, et au-delà, l’éditeur est un réseau de connexions. Dans cette conférence, je partagerai des histoires personnelles avec un récit plus large sur les femmes dans le secteur du livre. En piochant dans une boîte et en feuilletant un album de souvenirs, j’évoquerai les rencontres fortuites, les collaborations significatives et les fils parfois difficiles de l’effort collectif.

Nina Paim est une designer, commissaire d’exposition, rédactrice et éditrice brésilienne, basée à Porto, au Portugal. Elle a été co-commissaire de nombreuses expositions, ateliers et événements, notamment Feminist Findings (Berlin, 2020) et etceteras : festival féministe d’édition et de design (Porto, 2023). Trois fois lauréate du Swiss Design Awards, Nina a transmis ses connaissances par le biais d’enseignements et de conférences internationales, tandis que ses écrits ont été publiés par de nombreuses maisos d’édition internationales. En 2019, elle cofonde la plateforme féministe Futuress.org, qu’elle codirige jusqu’en 2023, date à laquelle elle crée Bikini Books, une maison d’édition féministe indépendante pour le design basée à Porto, au Portugal.

Les portes s’ouvrent à 10h °⸛⸰ la “silver space” est au cinquième étage du Beursschouwburg, accessible depuis l’intérieur du bâtiment par une cage d’escaliers infinie et un ascenceur sur demande. La pièce accueille d’habitude des DJs et des corps dansants, le corridor mène à des toilettes d’un côté et à une terrasse de l’autre. À l’intérieur sont disposés différentes sortes d’assises, des chaises, des coussins, des tapis, sur lesquel·les les premièr·es arrivé·es peuvent s’installer, boire une tasse de thé, lire des zines et des facsimilés, écouter des enregistrements sonores, regarder les objets présentés dans l’espace, se reposer ⸰⋆⸰

À 11h°° le programme commence, avec Loraine Furter corganisatrixd et l’artiste Moustapha Guissé au micro, qui introduisent l’espace, le programme, le matériel sonore réparti dans la pièce, faisant place aux transmissions orales et audio qui vont s’y passer, et les connectant avec d’autres formes aussi présentes ce jour.

Ensuite, Loraine et la graphiste Sarah Magnan présentent une méditation guidée & exercice de futurologie SF, ouvrant des espaces-temps rêvés pour des pratiques d’édition alternatives ⸰⸰⸰ ⋱

De retour dans notre réalité partagée, nous entendons d’autres invité·es présenter une série d’ateliers parallèles, qui auront lieu après la pause de midi ⦂ Backstage, un moment intime et partagé devant le miroir où les palettes de maquillage et autres accessoires deviennent des outils pour penser/créer de nouveaux personnages et mondes, avec les artistes et performeureuses Vinciane Mandrin & Nino André ⎰⎰ un groupe de lecture de passages de science fiction émancipatrice avec l’artiste et autrice de SF Clara Pacotte & la graphiste et fondatrice du projet Brave New Lit. Sherida Kuffour ⎰⎰ une discussion et moment de partage autour de mémoires diasporique et d’édition avec les artistes et graphistes Joud Toamah, Garine Gokceyan & Marie Damageux ⎰⎰ L’arpentage du livre “Abécédaire d’auto-édition féministe” avec la relieuse et chercheuse Lissa Choukrane ⎰⎰ une table de bricolage et de création de supports pour des publications aux reliures indisciplinées.

À 12⸰30 on fait une pause, et on remplit nos ventres et nos yeux des créations culinaires de Roxanne Maillet & Leo Ren O’faigain.

Après la pause de midi, à 13⸰30 les workshops commencent, répartis dans l’espacee.

À 16°°, on se réunit à nouveau pour écouter la slammeuse Joëlle Sambi, la designer et éducatrice Mio Kojima, la créatrice du podcast Asiofeminism Now! Mélanie Cao, qui partagent, chuchotent, et scandent des expériences et outils autour de comment composer avec différentes voix.

La journée se termine avec un mix d’enregistrements faits pendant la journée par la designer, artiste et DJ Sarah Saleh iRésistance archivistique, le sampling comme pratique politiquej

Une fin de journée en douceur, de 17h°° à 18h°° pour discuter, conspirer, s’asseoir ou s’allonger, boire une tasse de thé, lire des zines et des facsimilés, écouter des enregistrements sonores, regarder les objets présentés dans l’espace, se reposer.

Pour *Des pages qui soupirent et des cœurs d’interrogation*, Florence Cheval sera observatrice et descriptrice de l’espace, des artefacts, des publications, des humain.es, des échanges, des réflexions déployé.es au cours de cette journée. Elle écrira le fil des événements dans le but de tisser une archive vivante et accessible, navigant entre traduction des choses en textes, des textes en langues, des paroles en écrits.

Événement organisé par Loraine Furter, graphiste et chercheuse soutenue par le programme de doctorat de recherche en arts à Sint Lucas Antwerp, UAntwerp & ARIA. Loraine Furter est basée à Bruxelles. Elle s’intéresse aux récits, pratiques, outils et formes graphiques et d'édition qui proposent des alternatives subversives, enragées et pleines d'amour. Elle fait partie des fondateurices de la collective typographique Bye Bye Binary, du collectif cyberféministe Just for the record et du projet Intersections of Care. Elle travaille actuellement sur un projet de recherche autour des dimensions politiques de l'édition, créant des formes pour des histoires alternatives, minimisées ou oubliées, à travers une approche de design critique qui inclut des outils féministes, décoloniaux et anticapitalistes.
